The diet for biliary problems is intended for people diagnosed with different types of conditions such as acute or chronic cholecystitis, gallstones, biliary dyskinesia or biliary cancer. What are gallbladder diseases – Symptoms, complications, treatment.

Patients with these types of gallbladder disease frequently experience symptoms such as pain and discomfort in the upper abdomen, regurgitation, aerophagia, retrosternal burning, biliary discomfort, especially after eating foods that trigger a gallbladder crisis.

In order to more easily identify which foods trigger a biliary crisis, it is advisable to note how often they occur, what was eaten at that meal, how much was ingested (i.e. was the plate full or did the second bite trigger the patient to feel sick). There are a number of triggers such as smells – *heavy smells* such as the smell of soup combined with cooking other food at the same time.

Foods recommended for patients suffering from various types of biliary disorders and on the biliary diet include:

  • Soft or hard boiled eggs
  • Lean beef, fresh or frozen fish, lean poultry meat (turkey or chicken) without skin, pork tenderloin, lightly seasoned meat, tinned in water not oil.
  • Low-fat milk skimmed cheeses (lard, fresh cottage cheese, curd).
  • Fresh or frozen vegetables – greens, green vegetables, celeriac, green beans, courgettes, lovage, spinach, mushrooms, boiled, baked or mashed potatoes.
  • Low-fat pasta (diet biscuits, bread, wholegrain cereals, buns, sticky buns), rice, spaghetti, porridge)
  • Fresh, pitted, frozen or preserved fruit in the form of compotes or jams. Sugar-free fruit is ideal.
  • Low-fat butter, non-starchy sauces (eat sauces made with skimmed yoghurt), vegetable oils in moderate quantities.
  • Rice pudding, cooked in the oven with a little sugar or we can use sweetener, honey, fruit peel, seedless jam.
  • Lime, parsley, bay leaf, bay leaf, thyme should be used in small quantities and excesses and very spicy spices, especially hot ones, should be avoided as far as possible.
  • Still mineral water, St. John’s wort tea, mint tea, lime tea, juices from lightly sweetened compotes, vegetable soups (clear).


Patients diagnosed with various biliary diseases and on a biliary diet are advised not to eat the following foodstuffs:

Meat and meat preparations with a high fat content, such as:

  • Pork,
  • Venison,
  • Mutton or lamb
  • Minced meat of any kind
  • Goose meat,
  • Sausages
    smoked or fried meats (ham, prosciutto, smoked bacon, kaizer, stews, canned fatty meats, salami, sausages, sausages, meat pies, spicy fish, bacon, lard, mayonnaise).
  • High-calorie bakery products (such as pies, pastries, biscuits, saltines, croissants, meringues), cereals with added sugars, hot bread fresh from the oven).
  • Fried eggs-*eggs*, mayonnaise made from eggs.
  • Milk and high-calorie dairy products such as full-fat yoghurt, milk chocolate,
  • Fermented cheeses, high-fat cream, salted or spiced cheeses, processed cheese, cheese.
  • Vegetables with fiber such as radishes, cabbage, beetroot, cauliflower, dried beans, broccoli, onion, cucumber, garlic, horseradish.
  • Hot sauces containing chili, pepper, paprika, chili and mustard, sauces prepared for the barbecue.
  • Stone fruits such as walnuts, hazelnuts, almonds, peanuts, pistachios, cashew nuts, pumpkin seeds
  • Bubbly drinks, drinks straight from the fridge, very cold or hot drinks, sour drinks, drinks containing alcohol.
  • Desserts containing animal fat, desserts made with a lot of egg yolks or containing a lot of butter or heavy cream, and yeast doughs.

Diet in people diagnosed with acute cholecystitis

In the first 24-48 hours after the onset of illness, a diet containing plenty of liquids, such as low-sweetened herbal teas, vegetable soups, diluted fruit juices, is recommended. Two to three liters should be taken every two to three hours.

After 48 hours from the onset of the illness, fruit or vegetable purees, skimmed milk and various preparations with skimmed milk or yoghurt can be added to this diet.

Once the patient’s condition improves and the symptoms disappear, cow’s cheese, low-fat milk, lean fish meat, vegetable or pasta dumplings, lean poultry meat, ideally poultry, can be added to the previous diet. Food is gradually introduced into the diet and the patient’s progress is monitored.

Biliary dyskinesia, known as ‘lazy bowel’, is a very common problem among people. It manifests itself as biliary pain, affecting the gallbladder.

Drinking water during a meal dilutes the gastric juice, which in turn means that the digestive acids no longer do their job and the unpleasant cramping and bloating can occur.

However, if we feel a strong urge to drink water when we eat, or if we feel very thirsty, we can drink a moderate amount of water without any problems, but without feeling full.

A golden tip is to avoid drinking sweetened or fizzy drinks, as they speed up the feeling of satiety. The caloric intake of juices is high, their composition is enriched with significant concentrations of sugars and other elements that can lead to unpleasant symptoms.

Fruit meal – At what time of the day is it recommended to integrate it into the diet?

To avoid feeling bloated and overfull after a meal, doctors recommend that fruit should be eaten at least an hour after the main meal. However, there are exceptions – some fruits can be eaten immediately after a meal and can even act as a stomach dressing.

Recommended fruits after lunch: pineapple, kiwi. With their help we will promote digestion and feel much better. And if we follow these recommendations, we will be able to successfully keep problems away, in terms of triggering symptoms of gall pain, caused by sluggish bile.
