Details

Dr. Bintințan has collaborated with surgical teams from prestigious European hospitals, including Heidelberg University Hospital, AKH Vienna, and Clinic St. Luc Brussels. From these collaborations, he mastered advanced surgical techniques and the collaborative approach required in complex multidisciplinary teams—a model he applies daily.

During his residency, he participated in a research project at Heidelberg University, which resulted in the first published case of robotic transhiatal esophagectomy in Europe. He continued his research in minimally invasive transhiatal esophageal surgery, publishing an original technique for performing intrathoracic anastomosis via a purely transhiatal approach, and completed his doctoral thesis titled “Transhiatal Esophagectomy Through a Minimally Invasive Approach.”

He further specialized in esophageal and gastric surgery during an internship at AKH Vienna, where he refined techniques for minimally invasive esophagectomy, radical gastric cancer resection, and bariatric surgery (gastric sleeve).

Dr. Bintințan also completed an internship in visceral surgery and transplantation at Heidelberg University (two years), an upper digestive tract surgery internship at the University of Vienna (one month), and an internship in hepatobiliopancreatic surgery and liver transplantation at St. Luc, Université Catholique de Louvain, Brussels (six months).

He attended numerous specialized training courses in various surgical fields:

Dr. Bintințan has dedicated himself to implementing the advanced surgical methods learned during his internships and courses. He was among the leading promoters of laparoscopic approaches in colorectal surgery (right and left hemicolectomies), bariatric surgery (gastric sleeve), hernia surgery (unilateral or bilateral laparoscopic hernia repair), transanal endoscopic surgery (TEO), and the endoscopic treatment of perianal fistulas (VAAFT). These techniques are now integral to his daily clinical practice.

He advocates for applying modern, up-to-date protocols in the complex, multidisciplinary surgical management of breast, esogastric, pancreatic, colorectal, or gynecological oncology cases, utilizing advanced imaging, minimally invasive staging methods, neoadjuvant radiochemotherapy, and radical surgical techniques tailored to each patient.

Dr. Bintințan’s teaching and continuous medical education efforts are extensive. In 2005, he initiated an advanced laparoscopic surgery course at Heidelberg University, which continues with two editions annually for German doctors.

Since 2006, he has organized a similar course at Cluj-Napoca University for Romanian surgeons, and in 2009, he launched an introductory laparoscopic surgery course in Cluj-Napoca. He is a consistent collaborator of the Romanian Endoscopic Surgery Association’s laparoscopic courses, actively contributing through lectures and live surgery sessions. He also supports the surgery workshops of the Romanian Society of Surgery Students, Cluj branch.

He has authored or co-authored over 31 scientific papers presented at national congresses and 18 papers at international congresses. He has been invited to present lectures or original scientific work at 6 national and 14 international congresses, the most notable including:

  • European Congress of Coloproctology, Belgrade (2013)
  • European Association of Endoscopic Surgery, Vienna (2013)
  • International Colorectal Forum (2012)
  • European Colorectal Congress, St. Gallen (2011)

Dr. Bintințan is an active member of the Romanian Association for Endoscopic Surgery, the Romanian Society of Surgery, the European Association of Endoscopic Surgery, and the European Society of Digestive Surgery. He has authored or co-authored 13 articles published in Medline-indexed journals, including four in prestigious international journals, and his work has received 59 citations.

He has 37 articles published in abstract form in international Medline-indexed journals and has served as a reviewer for the World Journal of Gastroenterology, Langenbeck’s Archives of Surgery, and the Journal of Clinical Anesthesia

In 2011, in collaboration with UMF Cluj-Napoca, he organized an international workshop on endoscopic surgical treatment of anorectal pathology, introducing advanced techniques for rectal tumor and perianal fistula surgery at the Cluj Department of Surgery I.

His current research projects include:

  • Studying the effects of laparoscopic surgery on immune system function during the perioperative period (Grant 1)
  • Exploring the feasibility of reducing instrument size and trocar number in laparoscopic surgery (Grant 2)
  • Developing new instruments for laparoscopic procedures (Grant 3)
  • Assessing the role of virtual reality in surgical training
  • Evaluating laparoscopic approaches in hernia repair and severe acute necrotic pancreatitis
  • Examining outcomes of local endoscopic excision for low-risk rectal tumors

Naturally, Dr. Bintințan’s surgical expertise also covers all common conditions, including various hernias, cholecystectomy for gallstones, pancreatic and liver procedures, and gastric reduction surgeries, performed both laparoscopically and using traditional open techniques.
